★ FC/KAHUNA (City Rockers) – EXCLUSIVE PARTY SET!
In the late 90′s Dan and a group of like minded friends started a little club with an eclectic music policy (The Big Kahuna Burger) which built up a devoted following, gave Fat Boy Slim his first DJ gig, hosted such luminaries as The Chemical Brothers, 808 State and David Holmes and earned across the board accolades (notably club of the year in the UK’s The Face). DJing at the club got FC Kahuna remixing, recording and doing DJ tours with bands such as The Charlatans UK. Soon, boredom set in and the search for new challenges lead to a 2 pronged offensive … setting up a studio to make an album and a new residency at London institution Turnmills, the night was called Headstart.

Headstart was a truly groundbreaking club experience.. providing an alternative fruit to the contemporary basket of the time. Supporting electro, techno and disco… as well as FC Kahuna, Headstarts residents included Dave Clarke, Josh Wink, Andrew Weatherall and Justin Robertson in what can only be described as a blue print for the electro techno scene of the 21st Century.

As for the album, ‘Machine says Yes’ featured landmark tracks such as ‘Mindset To Cycle’, ‘Glitterball’ and ‘Hayling’, and sold 50, 000 copies worldwide. Such music featured in films such as Layer Cake, Riding Giants, Six Feet Under, CSI…. The albums success also lead to the creation of a live FC Kahuna outfit , playing shows at Leeds/Reading, Coachella, Roskilde, Bennecasim and Pukklepop, followed by sold out UK tour with Royksopp.

With the album ready to go, the chose to reside their DJ talents at their label (City Rockers) club night – the night was ’21st Century Bodyrockers’. Each month there was one guest… residents were FC Kahuna, Damian Lazarus, Erol Alkan and 2 Many DJs. Nuff said.

Since then Dan has been touring the world DJing.. taking in Mexico, Japan, Australia, USA, Spain, South Africa amongst others.. as well as crafting the follow up to Machine Says Yes (the end is in sight), throwing in the occasional remix (particularly worth a mention 2009′s Noah and The Whale ’5 years Time’, Boxer Rebellion ‘semi automatic’ (currently being span across radio one) remixes, 2 mixes for rising starts Chew Lips and Florence and The Machine remix for ‘Drumming’ (Dan produced the Florence material which lead to the Mercury nominated No 1 album artist getting signed) and producing tracks for the just released 2nd album from Leeds based band The Sunshine Underground album (a non album FC Kahuna / Sunshine Underground collaboration ‘From The City To The Sea’ currently available as a free download through thesunshineunderground.co.uk).

Composer, producer and international DJ, Damon Baxter aka Deadly Avenger is back! One of the first Fabric residents and contributors to the Fabric Live series of CD mixes, not to mention a key player in UK dance music, Damon Baxter aka Deadly Avenger has rocked more parties than you’ve had hot dinners. Respected and held in high regard by peers such as Fatboy Slim and Jon Carter, Damon has spent the past few years creating incredible soundtracks for television and film, most notably for the US crime drama series C.S.I. – the most successful TV show ever… apparently!

Deadly Avenger, first burst onto the dance music scene back in the the early noughties, starting out releasing records through J Saul Kane’s Depth Charge label before setting up the Illicit record label, releasing a string of raw, sample and beat heavy tracks in the mid 1990s.

Deadly AvengerSupported by the likes of Fatboy slim, Propellerheads and Jon Carter, Damon was heralded as the pioneer of ‘Big Beat’ touring the world and setting dancefloors alight, he eventually settled nicely into a Fabric Residency alongside Unkle and The Wiseguys, which lead to the release of two of the genres biggest records, ‘Evel Kneivel’ and ‘King Titos Gloves’.

But It wasn’t until the first remixes were commisioned that the true Deadly Avenger sound would emerge. A sound that the indie glitterati embraced, bands such as Travis, Manic Street Preachers, Elbow, and The Charlatans were all seduced by the overly emotional strings, blended with dirty beats and enigmatic arrangements. A sound that developed fully with the re-imagining of Bill Conti’s “Going the distance” into the form of ‘We Took Pelham’.

It was this piece that was to open the doors into the world of music to picture. The opening track from the critically acclaimed ‘Deep Red’ album, was to set the tone of things to come over the next few years. With music being used from adverts to movie trailers, sports shows to drama’s, Deadly Avenger has now gone full circle and is ready to unleash music once again.

i Editor’s Letter: Fatcat bankers

I am probably about to alienate a good proportion of i’s readers, old and new, but the two big stories this week about our so-called fatcat bankers have left me feeling more than a little uneasy.

I do not  know Fred Goodwin or Stephen Hester, I don’t bank with RBS, I don’t hate bankers. I do feel they earn far too much for what appears often to be legitimised gambling; have a misplaced sense of importance, fund each other’s lives through non-executive directorships that ensure their club’s inflated rewards carousel keeps turning, benefit from a shameful lack of responsibility, and have too much influence over elected officials.

And yet… The lynch-mob baying for blood and subsequently rejoicing over both Hester declining his bonus and Goodwin being stripped of his knighthood leaves me distinctly uncomfortable on two fronts. I do not feel sorry for them. Money may not buy happiness, but it can buy a degree of privacy and security to help you through your dark days.
I am left far more uneasy by the baying pursuit of two men who have not done anything illegal, and also the triumphalistic manner in which both news stories were received. Both have now suffered a degree of embarrassment or financial penalty. So what? The stories do not show the Government acting on its promise to get tough with bankers. Nothing is solved. These are mere gestures. Hester doesn’t need the £963k, and Goodwin? We all surely know it’s just a silly title?

This is about the politics of envy and politicians getting easy hits in. These events do nothing to fix a system that is in dire need of overhaul. It’s just grand-standing, and we should not fall for it.

Lee Potter aka Cut La Roc, made his name in the hurly-burly big beat days of the late 90s. Signed to Skint Records, the same label as Norman ‘Fatboy’ Cook, he was responsible for pioneering the big beat sound worldwide alongside Midfield General, Bentley Rhythm Ace and Fatboy Slim himself. Cut La Roc held a four-year residency at the Big Beat Boutique in his hometown of Brighton. He’s DJ’d all around the world several times, appeared on Top Of The Pops, set a new Guinness world record for DJing with the most decks at once (nine!), and has recorded with vocalists such as Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody.

Hot on the heels of “Flangestock 2011 – the movie” comes “Flangestock 2011 – the final hour”. Recorded live & direct at an orchard in Suffolk, 17 September 2011.

Shouts to James Shaman for tech know how. Its a bit rough round the edges due to some serato-esque needle issues (personally I blame the flies), and if you weren’t there you might wonder why the volume cuts at various chorus points, safe to say if you were there you’ll understand why (you were filling in the gaps in true style!). Special shouts out to the dropping of Fantasy UFO – I swear I haven’t played that out in a set since 1990! You also get the closing credits from our beloved host and its worth it for that alone…..

Anyway, its here for all the right reasons – ENJOY!

A while ago I finally, worked out how to copy all key info from the comments field to the key field in serato. Not sure why it took me so long as its blindingly obvious but I do know that no matter how I searched on Google for answers, I never found this easy method. So, here it is:

Assuming you have the key info currently written to your comments field….

1. Sort all tracks by order of comments.
2. Then select and highlight all 1A tracks (assuming your list of tracks starts at 1A)
3. Once you have selected all those tracks marked 1A, double click in the key field of 1 of the tracks, enter 1A and press enter.
4. Serato will ask you to confirm you want to update X amount of tracks. Click yes, and it will write 1A to the key field of all those tracks.
5. Rinse & repeat.

*** Probably worth backing up everything first just in case you make an error and update a shitload of tracks with the wrong info. Try it with just a small selection first so you understand it.

The 4th official Flangestock, yes we’re back with the ‘stocks favourite DJs and some fresh blood to ensure you get maximum party action for your money. This year’s line up looks set to be one the best yet, with the residents holding together, and even some welcome returns from DJs from the first Flangestock, and some new faces chucked in for good measure. No music on Sunday but you are welcome to stay and enjoy the site all day!

If you would like to book extra nights you can do that direct with the campsite. Some Flangestockers are staying an extra night on Sunday to further chill!

THE CAMPSITE

The festival takes place at an award winning campsite in Suffolk, your ticket price of £30 for the weekend includes full use of facilities – free hot showers, kitchen area with fridge and freezer and table tennis.

The campsite shop now has a full off licence, with beers, wines, ciders and local specialties. The shop has been extended so you won’t need to leave the site at all for provisions, seriously have a look before going to the supermarket, its very good value and some very tasty stuff, all you need for breakfast, BBQ’s, ice creams, treats, all sorts!

As always there will be wood available to purchase for campfires too, a very important part of the Flangestock experience.

Extra days camping can be booked either side of the weekend direct with the campsite, please explain you are a Flangestock ticket holder.
